The toll-houses of South Devon

Established on routes into Exeter in the 1750s, turnpikes soon extended across the county. While most toll-houses were rendered, the local shale stone can be seen at Yealmbridge, with red sandstone examples at Cheriton Cross and Venn Bridge.
